- We are going to be starting a physical science unit on chemistry. They will be completing in- class activities in which they will be learning to identify that matter is made of smaller units called molecules and atoms. They will also be learning to distinguish between mixtures and compounds.
- Students will be working in small groups to learn about these topics and share with each other.
Reading
- We are now working on Unit 4. This unit is called "Justice". Students will be working to answer the question: What is justice? This unit will focus on social studies concepts as well, so some of the assignments during this unit will count toward students' social studies grades.
- This week students will be reading the history article "Journey to Freedom" by Peter Winkler.
- The comprehension skills we will be working on are: interpret figurative language, make inferences, compare figurative language, analyze viewpoints, and compare viewpoints.
- The test will be on Thursday, 12/3.
Writing
- We are now working on Unit 4. This unit is called "Justice". Students will be working to answer the question: What is justice? This unit will focus on social studies concepts as well, so some of the assignments during this unit will count toward students' social studies grades.
- This week's writing project is to write an opinion. The is the prompt: You are a student contributor to a local newspaper. Write an opinion for Martin Luther King, Jr., Day. Use examples to address these questions. Why are the actions of individuals important? How can one person make a difference?
- We will work on this project during class, however, students may need to work on some of the assignment at home. Students will be graded according to the writing rubric posted on the top right column of this page.
- This assignment is due on Thursday, December 3.
Spelling
- This week we will be working on spelling words with long e: ee, ea; words with long o: oa, ow; and commonly misspelled words.
- The words are: bestow, committee, creed, degree, eagerness, goals, hoax, impeach, increased, narrow, proceedings, repeal, retreat, seeking, treatment, capital, capitol, loan, lone.
- The spelling test will be on Friday, December 4.
Grammar
- Students will be working on using linking verbs.
- Students are encouraged to take good grammar notes and to review their notes before each test.
- The grammar test will be on Thursday, December 3.
Math
- We are working on Chapter 6, Add and Subtract Fractions with Unlike Denominators.
- We will complete lessons 6.9-Chapter Review.
- On Thursday, students will take the Chapter 6 Test.
- On Friday, we will begin Chapter 7: Multiply Fractions.
- There will be one page of math homework assigned nightly.
- There are many resources available on ThinkCentral to help students.
- Every Friday, we will be having a multiplication timed test. Students should be practicing their multiplication facts daily.
Small Group Reading
- Students will be placed into leveled small groups based on the results of their Unit 3 scores.
- Students will be reading the following books this week: The Anti-Slavery Movement, Voice of Freedom: A Story about Frederick Douglass, The Great Migration, The House of Dies Drear.
- Students will also be completing learning stations during our small group reading time. All of these activities go along with our Unit 4 theme of justice. Students will turn in a packet of their work which will also count toward their social studies grades.
