We are working on a Geography unit. We will be completing lesson 15 this week. Students will be reading geography articles, looking at maps, and answering questions.
Reading
- We are working on Unit 7. It is entitled "Talking About Trash". Students will be working to answer the question: Why should we care about garbage? This unit will focus on science concepts as well, so some of the assignments during this unit will count toward students' science grades.
- The reading comprehension skills for the week are: explain author's reasons and evidence; form generalizations; compare authors' purposes; use multiple sources to solve a problem; and compare authors' use of reasons and evidence.
- We will be reading the essay "Message in a Bottle" by David de Rothschild.
- The Reading Comprehension Test will be on Friday, 4/29.
Writing
- We are working on Unit 7. It is entitled "Talking About Trash". Students will be working to answer the question: Why should we care about garbage? This unit will focus on science concepts as well, so some of the assignments during this unit will count toward students' science grades.
- This week's writing project is to write a how-to article. This is the prompt: The editor of a craft magazine is looking for how-to articles on the topic of reusing common household items. Write a how-to article that tells about a craft project that reuses or recycles something to create a new item.
- We will work on this project during class, however, students may need to work on some of the assignment at home. Students will be graded according to the writing rubric posted on the top right column of this page.
- This assignment is due on Monday, 5/2.
Spelling
- This week we will be working on spelling words with oo, words with silent consonants, and commonly misspelled words.
- The words are: cologne, foreign, ghastly, gnats, honorable, moisten, neighborhood, nook, overtook, plumbing, rookie, scent, subtle, writhing, reek, wreak, threw, through.
- The spelling test will be on Monday, 5/2.
Grammar
- Students will be working on using adverb clauses.
- Students are encouraged to take good grammar notes and to review their notes before each test.
- The grammar test will be on Monday, 5/2.
Math
- Our current math unit is entitled "Getting Ready for Grade 6". Students must have their Standards Practice Books at school as the lessons are in this book. There will be one page of homework assigned nightly.
- Lessons 4-7.
- On Thursday, there will be a quiz over lessons 1-6.
- There are many resources available on ThinkCentral to help students.
- Every Friday, we will be having a multiplication timed test. Students should be practicing their multiplication facts daily.
Small Group Reading
- Students will be placed into leveled small groups based on the results of their Unit 6 scores.
- Students will be reading the following books this week: Why Should I Recycle Garbage?, Composting, Waste and Recycling, Earth's Garbage Crisis.
- Students will also be completing learning stations during our small group reading time. All of these activities go along with our Unit 7 theme of trash. Students will turn in a packet of their work which will also count toward their science grades.
How the West Was Really Won
- Both fifth grade classes will be participating in a musical entitled How the West Was Really Won. This musical goes along with our Unit 6 theme of the wild west. Every student will have a part in the musical. The performance will be on Friday, May 13th at 10:00 on the playground.
