- Unit 1 is entitled Crossing Between Cultures. Students will be working to answer the question: How can where you are change who you are? This unit will focus on social studies concepts as well so some of the assignments during this unit will count toward students' social studies grades.
- Students will be reading the autobiography, A Refugee Remembers by John Bul Dau.
- Comprehension skills for this week are: compare and contrast, monitor and clarify, interpret figurative language, compare points of view.
- The test over these skills will be on Monday, August 21st.
Writing
- Unit 1 is entitled Crossing Between Cultures. Students will be working to answer the question: How can where you are change who you are? This unit will focus on social studies concepts as well so some of the assignments during this unit will count toward students' social studies grades.
- This week's writing assignment will be to research immigration. This is the prompt: Choose a country outside of the United States. Find out why people might immigrate from there to here. Then imagine you are one of those immigrants. Share with the class your decision to come to the United States.
- We will work on this assignment during class, however, students may need to work on some of the assignment at home. Students will be graded according to the research rubric posted on the top right column of this page.
- This assignment is due on Tuesday, August 22nd.
Spelling
- This week we will be working on spelling words with digraphs ch, tch and using commonly misspelled words correctly.
- The words are: beseech, charter, enrich, glitch, hunches, merchant, orchard, reproach, squelch, stitching, top-notch, torches, trenches, wrenched, wretched, medal, meddle, manner, manor
- The spelling test will be on Friday, August 25th.
Grammar
- Students will be working on using negative sentences and correlative conjunctions.
- Students are encouraged to take good grammar notes and to review their notes before each test.
- The grammar test will be on Monday, August 21st.
Small Group Reading
- Students will be placed into leveled small groups based on the results of the Benchmark tests.
- Students will be reading the following books this week: Ukraine: Immigration Today, Chinese Immigration, German-Jewish Immigration, Escape from Saigon: How a Vietnam War Orphan Became an American Boy
- Students will also be completing learning stations during our small group reading time. All of these activities go along with our Unit 1 theme of crossing between cultures. Students will turn in a packet of their work which will also count toward their social studies grades.
Math
- Chapter 2: Divide Whole Numbers.
- We will complete Lessons 2.2- 2.5 this week.
- On Thursday, students will take the Chapter 2 Mid-Chapter Checkpoint Quiz.
- There will be one page of math homework assigned nightly.
- There are many resources available on ThinkCentral to help students.
- Every Friday, we will be having a multiplication timed test. Students should be practicing their multiplication facts daily.
- We will be reading the book Little Cricket by Jackie Brown.
Science
- We will begin with Chapter 2 of our Interactive Science program. This chapter will focus on Forces and Motion. Students will be working to answer the question: What affects the motion of objects?
- We will work on Lesson 1: What are forces?
Social Studies
- This year we will be using USA Studies Weekly for our social studies content.
- We will be working on Week 3 which focuses on American Indians.
