Vocabulary: The vocabulary words are: citizenship, compare, contrast, custom, ethnic, foreign, origin, adapt, challenge, clarify, diversity, identity, monitor, society. There will be weekly tests on Fridays covering the vocabulary words.
Spelling: We will be working on short i and u and commonly misspelled words. The spelling words are: adjustment, bluntly, bundles, cherish, civilization, classic, destiny, distinctive, discrimination, festivity, impression, insult, suppress, triumph, uproar, idle, idol, idyll. The spelling test will be on Friday.
Grammar: Students will be working on using negative sentences and using correlative conjunctions.
Writing: Each week, students will be completing a writing project. This week' project will be a research project focusing on immigration. We will go through the steps of the writing process: prewrite, draft, revise, edit, publish, present.
Math: We will be working on our Go Math series. We will begin with Chapter 2 which will be about dividing whole numbers. We will be completing lessons 2.1-2.4 this week. There will be one page of math homework assigned nightly, except for Fridays. Each Friday, students will also take a multiplication timed test. It is very important for students to be fluid with their multiplication facts. Daily practice of multiplication facts is encouraged.
Social Studies: We will be starting off the year with a unit on geography. Students will practice using a variety of maps and answering questions about them. We also begin learning to identify the U.S. states on a map.
Science: We will begin by studying a unit entitled "Exploring Your Environment". It will show students the links among energy, environment, and energy efficiency. We will be answering the following questions: What is the environment? Where is it? Does the environment change? How? How does using energy affect the environment? How is the environment different now than it use to be?
