Vocabulary: The vocabulary skill for this week is using a thesaurus. There will be a test on Friday covering this skill as well as skills learned throughout the unit.
Spelling: We will be working on word with digraphs ch and tch and commonly misspelled words. The spelling words are: beseech, charter, enrich, glitch, hunches, merchant, orchard, reproach, squelch, stitching, top-notch, torches, trenches, wrenched, wretched, medal, meddle, manner, manor. The spelling test will be on Friday.
Grammar: Students will be working on using compound subjects and compound predicates.
Writing: This week we will be working on maintaining point of view in writing and writing narratives. We will be doing a variety of writing tasks each day. I will collect writing notebooks on Friday, and students will be graded on there work in their notebooks.
Math: We will be working on our Go Math series. We are working on Chapter 2 which will be about dividing whole numbers. We will be completing lessons 2.5-2.8 this week. There will be one page of math homework assigned nightly, except for Fridays. Each Friday, students will also take a multiplication timed test. It is very important for students to be fluid with their multiplication facts. Daily practice of multiplication facts is encouraged.
Social Studies: We will be starting off the year with a unit on geography. Students will practice using a variety of maps and answering questions about them. We also begin learning to identify the U.S. states on a map.
Science: We will begin by studying a unit entitled "Exploring Your Environment". It will show students the links among energy, environment, and energy efficiency. We will be answering the following questions: What is the environment? Where is it? Does the environment change? How? How does using energy affect the environment? How is the environment different now than it use to be?
