- Unit 4 is entitled Justice. Students will be working to answer the question: What is Justice? This unit will focus on social studies concepts as well so some of the assignments during this unit will count toward students' social studies grades.
- This week we will be reading the biography, Harvesting Hope: The Story of Cesar Chavez, by Kathleen Krull.
- Reading comprehension skills for the week are: explain text structure: sequence, make inferences, and recognize foreshadowing.
- The U4W3 reading comprehension test will be on Tuesday, January 9th.
Writing
- Unit 4 is entitled Justice. Students will be working to answer the question: What is Justice? This unit will focus on social studies concepts as well so some of the assignments during this unit will count toward students' social studies grades.
- This week's writing assignment will be to research a civil rights activist. This is the prompt: You are a history teacher at a local high school. You want to teach your students about Americans who have worked to protect human rights. Research and write a short biography about a well-known civil rights activist. Think about how this person's beliefs and accomplishments compare to those of Cesar Chavez. You will then take on the persona of your activist and present an actual speech of his or hers to the class.
- We will work on this assignment during class, however, students may need to work on some of the assignment at home. Students will be graded according to the research rubric posted on the top right column of this page.
- This assignment is due on Friday, January 12th.
Spelling
- This week we will be working on spelling words ending in -ed, and using commonly misspelled words correctly.
- The words are: appointed, associated, bribed, compromised, dedicated, elected, enforced, guaranteed, inaugurated, implied, interpreted, negotiated, nominated, persecuted, ratified, gilt, guilt, insight, incite.
- The spelling test will be on Wednesday, January 8th.
Grammar
- Students will be working on using helping verbs and present-progressive tense.
- Students are encouraged to take good grammar notes and to review their notes before each test.
- The U4W2 grammar test will be on Wednesday, January 10th.
Small Group Reading
- Students will be placed into leveled small groups based on the results of the Unit 3 assessments.
- Students will be finishing the following books this week: Cesar Chavez: Fighting for Farmworker, Strike Now!, Iqbal, Dolores Huerta: Voice for the Working Poor.
- Students will also be completing learning stations during our small group reading time. All of these activities go along with our Unit 4 theme of justice. Students will turn in a packet of their work which will also count toward their social studies grades.
- Students will need to take an A.R. quiz for their book.
Math
- Chapter 7: Multiply Fractions
- We will complete lessons 7.6-7.9 this week.
- On Tuesday, students will take the Mid-Chapter Checkpoint Quiz over lessons 7.1-7.6.
- There will be one page of math homework assigned nightly.
- There are many resources available on ThinkCentral to help students.
- Every Friday, we will be having a multiplication timed test. Students should be practicing their multiplication facts daily.
- Our next book will be The Watson's Go to Birmingham-1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis.
Science
- We will begin Chapter 6: Earth and Space.
- Students will be doing lesson 1: What is a Star?
- This year we will be using USA Studies Weekly for our social studies content.
