- Math
- We are working on Chapter7: Multiply Fractions.
- We will complete lessons 7.7-7.10 this week.
- On Monday, students will take the Mid-Chapter Checkpoint quiz.
- There will be one page of math homework assigned nightly.
- There are many resources available on ThinkCentral to help students.
- Every Friday, we will be having a multiplication timed test. Students should be practicing their multiplication facts daily.
- Small Group Reading
- Students will be placed into leveled small groups based on the results of their Unit 3 assessments.
- Students will be reading the following books this week: Cesar Chavez: Fighting for Farmworkers, Stike Now!, Iqbal, Dolores Huerta: Voice for the Working Poor. Students will also be completing learning stations during our small group reading time. All of these activities go along with our Unit 4 theme of justice. Students will turn in a packet of their work which will also count toward their social studies grades.

- Unit 4 is entitled Justice. Students will be working to answer the question: What is justice? This unit will focus on social studies concepts as well so some of the assignments during this unit will count toward students' social studies grades.
- Students will be reading the biography, Harvesting Hope, by Kathleen Krull.
- Comprehension skills for this week are: explain sequence, make inferences, recognize forshadowing.
- The test will be on Thursday, January 12th.
- Unit 4 is entitled Justice. Students will be working to answer the question: What is justice? This unit will focus on social studies concepts as well so some of the assignments during this unit will count toward students' social studies grades.
- The writing project for this week will be to research a civil rights activist. This is the prompt: You are a history teacher at a local high school. You want to teach your students about Americans who have worked to protect human rights. Research and write a short biography about a well-known civil rights activist. Think about how this person's beliefs and accomplishments compare to those of Cesar Chavez. You will then take on the persona of your activist and present an actual speech of his or hers to the class.
- Due Wednesday, January 11th.
- Students will be graded according to the research rubric which can be found on the top right corner of this page.
Spelling- This week we will be working on spelling verbs ending in -ed and commonly misspelled words.
- The words are: appointed, associated, bribed, comprompised, dedicated, elected, enforced, guarenteed, inaugurated, implied, interpreted, negotiated, nominated, persecuted, ratified, gilt, guilt, insight, incite.
- The spelling test will be on Thursday, January 12th.
Grammar- Students will be working on using helping verbs and present-progressive tense.
- Students are encouraged to take good grammar notes and to review their notes before each test.
- The grammar test will be on Thursday, January 12th.
- We will be reading the book, Elijah of Buxton by Christopher Paul Curtis.
Science - Our school has adopted a new science program, Interactive Science!
- We will begin Chapter 1: Properties of Matter this week.
