We are working on a Geography unit. We will be completing lesson 18 this week. Students will be reading geography articles, looking at maps, and answering questions.
Reading
- We are working on Unit 7. It is entitled "Talking About Trash". Students will be working to answer the question: Why should we care about garbage? This unit will focus on science concepts as well, so some of the assignments during this unit will count toward students' science grades.
- The reading comprehension skills for the week are: determine theme, draw conclusions, compare characters, explain elements of a poem, compare approaches to theme.
- We will be reading the poem "Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take the Garbage Out" by Shel Silverstein.
- The Reading Comprehension Test will be on Thursday, 5/19.
Writing
- We are working on Unit 7. It is entitled "Talking About Trash". Students will be working to answer the question: Why should we care about garbage? This unit will focus on science concepts as well, so some of the assignments during this unit will count toward students' science grades.
- This week's writing project is to write persuasive essay. This is the prompt: What can you do about garbage? Write an essay that persuades people to reduce the amount of trash they produce. Post your essay in a "Taking Care of Trash" display.
- We will work on this project during class, however, students may need to work on some of the assignment at home. Students will be graded according to the writing rubric posted on the top right column of this page.
- This assignment is due on Friday, 5/20.
Spelling
- This week we will be working on spelling words with VCCV, VCCCV Patterns and commonly misspelled words.
- The words are: ample, charcoal, compressed, consternation, contaminate, formula, implement, instances, merchandise, nostrils, obstinate, rubbish, substantial, temptation, tendency, vial, vile, team, teem.
- The spelling test will be on Thursday, 5/19.
Grammar
- Students will be working on using prepositions and prepositional phrases.
- Students are encouraged to take good grammar notes and to review their notes before each test.
- The grammar test will be on Wednesday, 5/18.
Math
- Our current math unit is entitled "Getting Ready for Grade 6". Students must have their Standards Practice Books at school as the lessons are in this book. There will be one page of homework assigned nightly.
- Lessons 13-16.
- On Wednesday, there will be a quiz over lessons 12-14.
- There are many resources available on ThinkCentral to help students.
- Every Friday, we will be having a multiplication timed test. Students should be practicing their multiplication facts daily.
Small Group Reading
- Students will be placed into leveled small groups based on the results of their Unit 6 scores.
- Students will be reading the following books this week: Waste Watchers, What's Poisoning the Garden?, Who Really Killed Cock Robin?, Green Boy.
- Students will also be completing learning stations during our small group reading time. All of these activities go along with our Unit 7 theme of trash. Students will turn in a packet of their work which will also count toward their science grades.
