- Unit 7 is entitled Talking About Trash. Students will be working to answer the question: Why should we care about garbage? This unit will focus on science concepts as well so some of the assignments during this unit will count toward students' science grades.
- This week we will be reading the persuasive article, The World of Waste, by Marybeth Lorbiecki.
- Reading comprehension skills for the week are: author's viewpoint, learn to synthesize, form generalizations, use text features, identify reasons and evidence.
- The U7W1 reading comprehension test will be on Friday, May 11th.
Writing
- Unit 7 is entitled Talking About Trash. Students will be working to answer the question: Why should we care about garbage? This unit will focus on science concepts as well so some of the assignments during this unit will count toward students' science grades.
- This week's writing assignment will be to research plastics. This is the prompt: A town meeting is being held to decide whether some kinds of plastics should be banned. Your class has been asked to design posters to inform voters of the pros and cons of plastics in order to help voters make informed decisions.
- We will work on this assignment during class, however, students may need to work on some of the assignment at home. Students will be graded according to the research rubric posted on the top right column of this page.
- This assignment is due on Monday, May 14th.
Spelling
- This week we will be working on spelling words with hard and soft c,g and using commonly misspelled words correctly.
- The words are: accumulate, calculate, certify, clogging, comply, container, criticize, disgusting, garbage, germs, grudgingly, indulge, obligation, recycle, regulate, been, bin, overdo, overdue.
- The spelling test will be on Friday, May 11th.
Grammar
- Students will be working on using adverbs.
- Students are encouraged to take good grammar notes and to review their notes before each test.
- The U7W1 grammar test will be on Friday, May 11th.
Small Group Reading
- Students will be placed into leveled small groups based on the results of the Unit 6 assessments.
- Students will be reading the following books this week: Kids Care for the Earth; Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Plastic; Reduce and Reuse; Earth-Friendly Waste Management.
- Students will also be completing learning stations during our small group reading time. All of these activities go along with our Unit 7 theme of Talking About Trash. Students will turn in a packet of their work which will also count toward their science grades.
Math
- We will be spending about the next two weeks reviewing Chapters 1-11. We will then take the End-of-Year Test on Monday (5/7) and Tuesday (5/8).
- On Wednesday, we will begin our final unit, "Getting Ready for Grade 6". We will complete lessons 1-3 this week.
- There will be one page of math homework assigned nightly.
- There are many resources available on ThinkCentral to help students.
- Every Friday, we will be having a multiplication timed test. Students should be practicing their multiplication facts daily.
- We will be reading Just Grace Goes Green by Charise Mericle Harper.
Science
- We have begun working on a unit entitled The Nature of Science. We will be working to answer the question, "What is science?".
- This week we will be working on a STEM activity called "Where's the Wind Going?". In this activity, students will design, build, and test a wind vane.
- We will be starting our musical entitled How the West Was Really Won. This musical goes with our Unit 6 theme of The Wild West. All students will be require to participate as part of their social studies grades. The performance will be on Friday, May 18th at 10:00 in the auditorium.
- This year we will be using USA Studies Weekly for our social studies content.
