- Unit 3 is entitled Nature's Network. Students will be working to answer the question: What is the power of the sun? This unit will focus on science concepts as well so some of the assignments during this unit will count toward students' science grades.
- This week we will be reading the expository nonfiction Living Links by Diane Salisian.
- Reading comprehension skills for the week are: explain relationships between concepts, summarize text, compare content, compare text structures.
- The U3W2 reading comprehension test will be on Tuesday, October 24th.
Writing
- Unit 3 is entitled Nature's Network. Students will be working to answer the question: What is the power of the sun? This unit will focus on science concepts as well so some of the assignments during this unit will count toward students' science grades.
- This week's writing assignment will be to write a science report. This is the prompt: Your class will hold a mini science fair about food webs. Write a science report for the fair explaining a food web within one ecosystem. Use examples to explain the roles of producers and consumers. Include an explanation of how energy is transferred among living things. Feature a drawing of your food web. Present your final report as a poster.
- We will work on this assignment during class, however, students may need to work on some of the assignment at home. Students will be graded according to the writing rubric posted on the top right column of this page.
- This assignment is due on Wednesday, October 25th.
Spelling
- This week we will be working on spelling multisyllabic words words and using commonly misspelled words correctly.
- The words are: algae, burrow, carcass, dominant, extinct, instinct, irregular, mutual, native, organic, saliva, slaughter, territory, unique, vegetation, burro, borough.
- The spelling test will be on Tuesday, October 24th.
Grammar
- Students will be working on using plural nouns.
- Students are encouraged to take good grammar notes and to review their notes before each test.
- The unit 2 grammar test will be on Tuesday, October 24th.
Small Group Reading
- Students will be placed into leveled small groups based on the results of the Unit 2 assessments.
- Students will be reading the following books this week: Food Chain Frenzy, One Day in the Prairie, Baboon, Island of the Blue Dolphins.
- Students will also be completing learning stations during our small group reading time. All of these activities go along with our Unit 3 theme of nature's network. Students will turn in a packet of their work which will also count toward their science grades.
Math
- Chapter 4: Multiply Decimals
- On Monday, we will be doing the chapter 4 review.
- On Tuesday, students will take the Chapter 4 math test.
- Chapter 5: Divide Decimals
- We will complete lessons 5.1-5.3 this week.
- There will be one page of math homework assigned nightly.
- There are many resources available on ThinkCentral to help students.
- Every Friday, we will be having a multiplication timed test. Students should be practicing their multiplication facts daily.
- We will be reading the book Dogsong by Gary Paulsen.
Science
- We will begin with Chapter 2 of our Interactive Science program. This chapter will focus on Forces and Motion. Students will be working to answer the question: What affects the motion of objects?
- Students have been assigned the chapter review, pages 90-92 in their science books.
- We will take the Chapter 2 test on Tuesday, October 24th.
- This year we will be using USA Studies Weekly for our social studies content.
- We will be working on Week 8 which focuses on the Early English Colonies.
