Vocabulary: The vocabulary skill for this week is using word origins to determine word meanings. There will be a test on Friday covering this skill.
Spelling: We will be working on words with digraphs ck, sh and commonly misspelled words. The spelling words are: anguish, backfire, bicker, gimmick, harsh, homesick, lackluster, perish, shattering, shawl, shielded, shimmer, shrine, stricken, threshold, aisle, I'll, isle. The spelling test will be on Friday.
Grammar: Students will be working on using introductory elements and punctuating elements with commas.
Writing: This week we will be working on organizing writing. Students will be writing a compare and contrast essay. This will be done in their writing notebooks. Notebooks will be collected on Friday to be graded.
Math: We will be working on our Go Math series. We have started Chapter 3, which covers adding and subtracting decimals. We will complete lessons 3.3-3.6 this week. There will be one page of math homework assigned nightly, except for Fridays. Each Friday, students will also take a multiplication timed test. It is very important for students to be fluid with their multiplication facts. Daily practice of multiplication facts is encouraged.
Social Studies: We are working on identifying the 50 U.S. states on a map. There will be a test this Wednesday, Sept. 3rd on all 50 states. Students will have a blank map of the U.S. and will have to label each state.
Science: We are studying a unit entitled "Exploring Your Environment". It will show students the links among energy, environment, and energy efficiency. We will be answering the following questions: What is the environment? Where is it? Does the environment change? How? How does using energy affect the environment? How is the environment different now than it use to be?
