Math: We will be spending the week reviewing for the AIMS test. There will be one page of homework assigned nightly in addition to any work not completed during class. Reading: We will be reviewing for the AIMS test this week.
Reading groups: Reading groups will be revised this week based on third quarter data. We will be working on a variety of reading and literacy skills. Students will be expected to complete assignments related to the books we are reading, as well as to take Accelerated Reader quizzes on the books we read. We are currently reading the following books: Tuck Everlasting, Apple Island of the Truth About Teachers, How to Steal a Dog, and Leprechauns Don't Play Fetch.
Reading homework: We're going to start some test preparation. I will send home one reading passage each night with several multiple choice questions. This will be due the following day.
Reading Fluency: We have started a readers' theater unit to help practice reading fluency in addition to comprehension. We will be working on a readers' theater play that students will perform. Students will be assessed on reading fluency and comprehension. Our first play will be performed on Tuesday at 12:15 in our classroom.. Parents and family members are welcome to attend. On Wednesday, students will take at quiz on the play. On Thursday, we will begin a new play.
Spelling: We will be working to spell grade-appropriate words correctly. Students will receive one practice page each day. This page will be due that day. If students do not complete the work during class, they must finish it for homework and turn it in the next day. Students will take a test on Friday over the week's spelling words. This week we will be working on spelling words with the long i sound and adding endings -ed and -ing. The spelling words are: idea, silent, myself, lying, apply, knight, quite, I'm, license, buy, inquire, higher, variety, smiling, diagram, rhyme, widest, python.
Social Studies: Students are creating a humorous cartoon or fable that conveys a message about the Revolutionary era. We will compile these cartoons and fables into a chronological book. This is due Tuesday, April 1st. We will then watch the movie 1776, a musical relating to the Revolutionary War. Students must have a signed permission slip in order to watch the movie.
Science: We are working on a unit on the human body. This week we will be investigating fingerprints and we will begin an inquiring investigation in which students will be choosing an area of the human body to be learning more about. We will be working on this investigation during class time.
Writing and Grammar: We will be reviewing for AIMS this week, especially since fifth graders will be taking the writing portion of AIMS.
