- We are working on the Getting Ready for Grade 6 Unit.
- We will complete lessons 13-15 this week.
- On Wednesday, students will be taking the checkpoint quiz over lessons 12-14.
- There will be one page of math homework assigned nightly.

- Small Group Reading
- Students have been placed into leveled small groups based on the results of their Unit 6 assessments.
- Students will be reading the following books this week: Kids Care for the Earth; Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Plastic; Reduce and Reuse; Earth-Friendly Waste Management.
- Students will also be completing learning stations during our small group reading time. All of these activities go along with our Unit 7 theme of why should we care about garbage? Students will turn in a packet of their work which will also count toward their science grades.
- Reading
- Unit 7 is entitled Talking About trash. Students will be working to answer the question: Why should we care about garbage? This unit will focus on science concepts as well so some of the assignments during this unit will count toward students' science grades.
- This week we will be reading the essay, Message in a Bottle by David de Rothschild.
- Reading Comprehension skills for the week are: explain author's reasons and evidence, form generalizations, compare authors' purposes, use multiple sources to solve a problem.
- The Week 1 test will be on Monday, May 22nd.

- The writing project for this week will be to research plastics. This is the prompt: A town meeting is being held to decide whether some kinds of plastics should be banned. Your class has been asked to design posters to inform voters of the pros and cons of plastics in order to help voters make informed decisions.

- Students will be graded according to the research rubric which can be found on the top right corner of this page.
Spelling- This week we will be working on spelling words with hard and soft c,g and commonly misspelled words.
- The words are: accumulate, calculate, certify, clogging, comply, container, criticize, disgusting, garbage, germs, grudgingly, indulge, obligation, recycle, regulate, been, bin, overdo, overdue.
- The spelling test will be on Tuesday, May 23rd.
Grammar- Students will be working on using adverbs.
- Students are encouraged to take good grammar notes and to review their notes before each test.

- We are reading the book, The Serpent Never Sleeps by Scott O'Dell. This week we will be working on vocabulary from the book. We will also research and compare the Calvinist and Puritan religions.
