- We are working on the Getting Ready for Grade 6 Unit.
- We will complete lessons 4-7 this week.
- On Thursday, students will take the checkpoint quiz over lessons 1-6.
- There will be one page of math homework assigned nightly.
- There are many resources available on ThinkCentral to help students.
- Every Friday, we will be having a multiplication timed test. Students should be practicing their multiplication facts daily.
- Small Group Reading
- Students have been placed into leveled small groups based on the results of their Unit 5 assessments.
- Students will be reading the following books this week: Sarah, Plain and Tall; Jim Ugly; Bound for Oregon; Letters from the Corrugated Castle.
- Students will also be completing learning stations during our small group reading time. All of these activities go along with our Unit 6 theme of what does it take to settle a new land? Students will turn in a packet of their work which will also count toward their social studies grades.
- Reading
- Unit 6 is entitled The Wild West. Students will be working to answer the question: What does it take to settle a new land? This unit will focus on social studies concepts as well so some of the assignments during this unit will count toward students' social studies grades.
- Students will be reading the narrative poem Rhyolite: The True Story of a Ghost Town by Diane Siebert.
- Comprehension skills for this week are: explain narrative poetry, visualize, explain the structure of a poem, compare genres, determine theme, compare themes.
- The test will be on Thursday, May 4th.
- Unit 6 is entitled The Wild West. Students will be working to answer the question: What does it take to settle a new land? This unit will focus on social studies concepts as well so some of the assignments during this unit will count toward students' social studies grades.
- The writing project for this week will be to write a narrative poem. This is the prompt: Write a poem that tells a story about the people or events in the Old West. You will share your writing during a poetry reading.
- Due Thursday, May 4th.
- Students will be graded according to the writing rubric which can be found on the top right corner of this page.
Spelling- This week we will be working on spelling words with oi, oy, ou, ow and commonly misspelled words.
- The words are: alternate, applaud, austere, booth, cautious, downfall, flawless, gloomy, halter, haunches, noose, pewter, skewed, sprawling, squall, hoard, horde, sole, soul.
- The spelling test will be on Thursday, May 4th.
Grammar- Students will be working on using indefinite pronouns.
- Students are encouraged to take good grammar notes and to review their notes before each test.

- Social Studies
- We will be starting our musical entitled How the West Was Really Won. This musical goes with our Unit 6 theme of The Wild West. All students will be require to participate as part of their social studies grades. The performance is May 12th at 9:00 on the basketball court. Please join us !!
