- Unit 7 is entitled Talking About Trash. Students will be working to answer the question: Why should we care about garbage? This unit will focus on science concepts as well so some of the assignments during this unit will count toward students' science grades.
- This week we will be reading the essay, Message in a Bottle, by David de Rothschild.
- Reading comprehension skills for the week are: explain author's reasons and evidence, form generalizations, compare authors' purposes, use multiple sources to solve a problem, and compare authors' use if reasons and evidence.
- The U7W2 reading comprehension test will be on Tuesday, May 22nd.
Writing
- Unit 7 is entitled Talking About Trash. Students will be working to answer the question: Why should we care about garbage? This unit will focus on science concepts as well so some of the assignments during this unit will count toward students' science grades.
- This week's writing assignment will be to write a how-to article. This is the prompt: The editor of a craft magazine is looking for how-to articles on the topic of reusing common household items. Write a how-to article that tells about a craft project that reuses or recycles something to create a new item.
- We will work on this assignment during class, however, students may need to work on some of the assignment at home. Students will be graded according to the writing rubric posted on the top right column of this page.
- This assignment is due on Tuesday, May 22nd.
Spelling
- This week we will be working on spelling words with 00, words with silent consonants, and using commonly misspelled words correctly.
- The words are: cologne, foreign, ghastly, gnats, honorable, moisten, neighborhood, nook, overtook, plumbing, rookie, scent, subtle, writhing, reek, wreak, threw, through.
- The spelling test will be on Tuesday, May 22nd.
Grammar
- Students will be working on using adverb clauses.
- Students are encouraged to take good grammar notes and to review their notes before each test.
- The U7W2 grammar test will be on Tuesday, May 22nd.
Small Group Reading
- Students will be placed into leveled small groups based on the results of the Unit 6 assessments.
- Students will be reading the following books this week: Kids Care for the Earth; Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Plastic; Reduce and Reuse; Earth-Friendly Waste Management.
- Students will also be completing learning stations during our small group reading time. All of these activities go along with our Unit 7 theme of Talking About Trash. Students will turn in a packet of their work which will also count toward their science grades.
Math
- Our final unit is "Getting Ready for Grade 6". We will complete lessons 7-9 this week.
- On Monday, students will take the Checkpoint quiz over lessons 1-6.
- There will be one page of math homework assigned nightly.
- There are many resources available on ThinkCentral to help students.
- Every Friday, we will be having a multiplication timed test. Students should be practicing their multiplication facts daily.
- We will be reading Just Grace Goes Green by Charise Mericle Harper.
Science
- We have begun working on a unit entitled The Nature of Science. We will be working to answer the question, "What is science?".
- This week we will be working on a STEM activity called "Where's the Wind Going?". In this activity, students will design, build, and test a wind vane.
- This year we will be using USA Studies Weekly for our social studies content.
