- Unit 6 is entitled The Wild West. Students will be working to answer the question: What does it take to settle a new land? This unit will focus on social studies concepts as well so some of the assignments during this unit will count toward students' social studies grades.
- This week we will be reading the narrative poem, Rhyolite: The True Story of a Ghost Town, by Diane Siebert.
- Reading comprehension skills for the week are: explain narrative poetry, visualize, explain the structure of a poem, reread a narrative poem, compare genres, determine theme, and compare themes.
- The Unit 6 reading comprehension test will be on Thursday, May 3rd.
Writing
- Unit 6 is entitled The Wild West. Students will be working to answer the question: What does it take to settle a new land? This unit will focus on social studies concepts as well so some of the assignments during this unit will count toward students' social studies grades.
- This week's writing assignment will be to write a journal entry. This is the prompt: You are a miner in Ryholite who is keeping a journal for himself about his experiences. Write a journal entry about what your life as a miner is like and how you feel about it.
- We will work on this assignment during class, however, students may need to work on some of the assignment at home. Students will be graded according to the writing rubric posted on the top right column of this page.
- This assignment is due on Tuesday, April 24th.
Spelling
- This week we will be working on spelling words with oi, oy, ou, ow and using commonly misspelled words correctly.
- The words are: allowed, alloy, bout, coiled, confound, crouching, downhearted, exploit, outlandish, ploy, pounced, profound, renounce, void, vow, council, counsel, flair, flare.
- The spelling test will be on Tuesday, April 24th.
Grammar
- Students will be working on using possessive and demonstrative pronouns.
- Students are encouraged to take good grammar notes and to review their notes before each test.
- The Unit 5 grammar test will be on Tuesday, April 24th.
Small Group Reading
- Students will be placed into leveled small groups based on the results of the Unit 5 assessments.
- Students will be finishing the following books this week: The Story of the Pony Express, The Railroad, Bull's Eye: A Photobiography of Annie Oakley.
- Students will also be completing learning stations during our small group reading time. All of these activities go along with our Unit 6 theme of The Wild West. Students will turn in a packet of their work which will also count toward their social studies grades.
Math
- We will be spending about the next two weeks reviewing Chapters 1-11. We will then take the End-of-Year Test. Date to follow.
- There will be one page of math homework assigned nightly.
- There are many resources available on ThinkCentral to help students.
- Every Friday, we will be having a multiplication timed test. Students should be practicing their multiplication facts daily.
- We will finished the book Dark Water Rising by Marian Hale. Students will then need to take an A.R. Quiz on the book.
Science
- We will be working on an inquiry investigation called: Using the Scientific Method.
- We will be starting our musical entitled How the West Was Really Won. This musical goes with our Unit 6 theme of The Wild West. All students will be require to participate as part of their social studies grades.
