- We are working on a physical science unit on chemistry. They will be completing in- class activities in which they will be learning to identify that matter is made of smaller units called molecules and atoms. They will also be learning to distinguish between mixtures and compounds.
- Students will be completing activities involving the periodic table of the elements and testing substances for acidity.
Reading
- We are now working on Unit 4. This unit is called "Justice". Students will be working to answer the question: What is justice? This unit will focus on social studies concepts as well, so some of the assignments during this unit will count toward students' social studies grades.
- This week students will be reading the social studies article "A Filmmaker for Justice " by Nancy-Jo Hereford.
- The comprehension skills we will be working on are: explain relationships between ideas in text, make inferences, compare literary language, compare text structures, analyze relationships between ideas.
- The test will be on Friday, 12/18.
Writing
- We are now working on Unit 4. This unit is called "Justice". Students will be working to answer the question: What is justice? This unit will focus on social studies concepts as well, so some of the assignments during this unit will count toward students' social studies grades.
- This week's writing project is to write a research report. The is the prompt: Write a report about an event in U.S. history when justice was achieved. Place your reports in a journal called Justice in America.
- We will work on this project during class, however, students may need to work on some of the assignment at home. Students will be graded according to the writing rubric posted on the top right column of this page.
- This assignment is due on Friday, December 18.
Spelling
- This week we will be working on spelling verbs ending in -ing and commonly misspelled words.
- The words are: advising, balancing, declaring, emerging, exhibiting, governing, insisting, justifying, mentioning, oppressing, prohibiting, persuading, rebelling, revolting, vetoing, principle, principal, pleas, please.
- The spelling test will be on Friday, December 18.
Grammar
- Students will be working on using present-perfect tense and forms of be and have.
- Students are encouraged to take good grammar notes and to review their notes before each test.
- The grammar test will be on Friday, December 18.
Math
- We are working on Chapter 7: Multiply Fractions.
- We will complete lessons 7.7-7.9.
- On Monday, students will take the Mid-Chapter Checkpoint quiz. It will cover lessons 7.1-7.6.
- There will be one page of math homework assigned nightly.
- There are many resources available on ThinkCentral to help students.
- Every Friday, we will be having a multiplication timed test. Students should be practicing their multiplication facts daily.
Small Group Reading
- Students will be placed into leveled small groups based on the results of their Unit 3 scores.
- Students will be reading the following books this week: Votes for Women, The Struggle for Equality, A Strong Right Arm: The Story of Mamie "Peanut" Johnson, With Courage and Cloth.
- Students will also be completing learning stations during our small group reading time. All of these activities go along with our Unit 4 theme of justice. Students will turn in a packet of their work which will also count toward their social studies grades.
