- Unit 1 is entitled Crossing Between Cultures. Students will be working to answer the question: How can where you are change who you are? This unit will focus on social studies concepts as well so some of the assignments during this unit will count toward students' social studies grades.
- Students will be tested on all of the Unit 1 skills this week. The test will be on Tuesday, August 29th.
Writing
- Unit 1 is entitled Crossing Between Cultures. Students will be working to answer the question: How can where you are change who you are? This unit will focus on social studies concepts as well so some of the assignments during this unit will count toward students' social studies grades.
- This week's writing assignment will be to write a personal narrative. This is the prompt: Tell about a time when you had to adjust to a new place or situation. Add your story to a class book about dealing with change.
- We will work on this assignment during class, however, students may need to work on some of the assignment at home. Students will be graded according to the writing rubric posted on the top right column of this page.
- This assignment is due on Wednesday, August 30th.
Spelling
- This week we will be working on spelling words with digraphs ch, tch and using commonly misspelled words correctly.
- The words are: beseech, charter, enrich, glitch, hunches, merchant, orchard, reproach, squelch, stitching, top-notch, torches, trenches, wrenched, wretched, medal, meddle, manner, manor
- The spelling test will be on Monday, August 28th.
Grammar
- Students will be working on using compound subjects and compound predicates.
- Students are encouraged to take good grammar notes and to review their notes before each test.
- The unit 1 grammar test will be on Monday, August 28th.
Small Group Reading
- Students will be placed into leveled small groups based on the results of the Benchmark tests.
- Students will be reading the following books this week: Ukraine: Immigration Today, Chinese Immigration, German-Jewish Immigration, Escape from Saigon: How a Vietnam War Orphan Became an American Boy.
- Students will also be completing learning stations during our small group reading time. All of these activities go along with our Unit 1 theme of crossing between cultures. Students will turn in a packet of their work which will also count toward their social studies grades.
Math
- Chapter 2: Divide Whole Numbers.
- We will complete Lessons 2.6-2.9 this week.
- There will be one page of math homework assigned nightly.
- There are many resources available on ThinkCentral to help students.
- Every Friday, we will be having a multiplication timed test. Students should be practicing their multiplication facts daily.
- We will be reading the book Little Cricket by Jackie Brown.
Science
- We will begin with Chapter 2 of our Interactive Science program. This chapter will focus on Forces and Motion. Students will be working to answer the question: What affects the motion of objects?
- We will work on Lesson 2: What are Newton's laws?
Social Studies
- This year we will be using USA Studies Weekly for our social studies content.
- We will be working on Week 5 which focuses on Early Explorers.
