Vocabulary: The vocabulary words for this week are: absorb, conflict, heat, reflect, thermal, transmit, assume, event, explanation, power, theory. There will be a test on Friday covering these words.
Spelling: We will be working on word with short e and commonly misspelled words. The spelling words are: avenge, ceremony, comet, chemical, constellation, density, excessive, intense, penetrate, prominent, sensory, splendor, temperature, translucent, vessel, desert, dessert, intense, intents. The spelling test will be on Friday.
Grammar: Students will be working on using introductory elements and participial phrases.
Writing: This week we will be working on using sensory details and writing a story ending. Student will be asked to write a new ending to the story "Ten Suns" that shows what else could have happened. This story ending will be due on Friday.
Math: We will be working on our Go Math series. We are finishing Chapter 2 which is about dividing whole numbers. We will be completing lessons 2.9-Chapter Review this week. The Chapter 2 Test will be on Wednesday. On Thursday we will begin Chapter 3, which covers adding and subtracting decimals. There will be one page of math homework assigned nightly, except for Fridays and the test day. Each Friday, students will also take a multiplication timed test. It is very important for students to be fluid with their multiplication facts. Daily practice of multiplication facts is encouraged.
Social Studies: We are working on identifying the 50 U.S. states on a map. There will be a test next Wednesday, Sept. 3rd on all 50 states. Students will have a blank map of the U.S. and will have to label each state.
Science: We are studying a unit entitled "Exploring Your Environment". It will show students the links among energy, environment, and energy efficiency. We will be answering the following questions: What is the environment? Where is it? Does the environment change? How? How does using energy affect the environment? How is the environment different now than it use to be?
