Math: We are working on Chapter 11 this week. It will cover geometry and volume. We will complete lessons 11.8-11.11 this week. .There will be one page of homework assigned nightly in addition to any work not completed during class. Reading: We are working on main idea and supporting details. We have begun a final project to pull the concept together and offer students an opportunity to demonstrate creatively what they learned in the lessons.
Reading groups: Reading groups have been revised. We will be working on a variety of reading and literacy skills. Students will be expected to complete assignments related to the books we are reading, as well as to take Accelerated Reader quizzes on the books we read. We are currently reading the following books: Misery Guts, Encyclopedia Brown Cracks the Case, The Case of the Million-Dollar Mystery, and The White Wolf.
Reading homework: There will be one page of reading homework assigned nightly. This week we will be focusing on Cause-and-Effect Maps and Relationships.
Reading Skill Practice: We will be working a variety of reading skills. Students will read a short passage and then answer questions about the passage. We will be taking periodic comprehension tests on the reading passages. I will also be testing students on reading fluency. This week we will be focusing on quoting accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text; explaining how an author uses reasons and evidence to support particular points in a text, identifying which reasons and evidence support which points.
Spelling: We will be working to spell grade-appropriate words correctly. Students will receive one practice page each day. This page will be due that day. If students do not complete the work during class, they must finish it for homework and turn it in the next day. Students will take a test on Friday over the week's spelling words. This week we will be working on words with the long e sound and the long u sound, recognizing the short vowel sound in been. The spelling words are: fifteen, referee, eager, ready, please, ecology, maybe, been, only, universe, future, communicate, beautiful, unusual, cute, cube, fuel.
Social Studies: We are working on a unit on the American Revolution. Students are currently working on a short research project in which they selected one of the following historical documents: Thomas Paine's Common Sense, published January 9, 1776; Letter from Abigail Adams to her husband, John, March 31, 1776; Patrick Henry's speech to the Virginia Convention, March 23, 1775; The Unanimous Declaration of the Thirteen United States of America (The Declaration of Independence), approved by Congress on July 4, 1776; England's Declaratory Act of March 18, 1766. Students need to write a short paragraph about who wrote the document and the writer's significance to the American Revolution, as well as what the purpose of the document was. This is due Wednesday, February 26th.
Science: We are going to begin a unit on the human body. This week we will be reading and taking notes on the parts of the skeletal system and the functions and parts of the nervous system.
Writing and Grammar: Each day students will complete a writing warm-up which will cover many writing and grammar skills. This week, our focus will be on explaining the function of conjunctions, prepositions, Students will also write a quickwrite each day on a given prompt. Students should be writing at least a paragraph each day.
